The Department of Disease Control (DDC) blames the poor sanitary measures of a restaurant bar in Kalasin province for the recent Covid-19 Omicron variant spread. The number of infections ascent to 249 across 12 provinces, in the Northeast and the North.
DDC boss, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong said the outbreak began when a married Thai couple visited the Kalasin eatery on December 12 after they returned from Belgium. The couple tested negative for Covid-19 on December 10 but later tested positive for Omicron. They visited Bar K on December 12th, inadvertently bringing the Omicron variant with them. Opas says the couple visited two other bars that night, named by the DDC as “Bar Q” and “Bar S”.
Bar K did not follow the DDC recommendations for the prevention of the virus spread as they did not provide ATK tests for staff, who are fully vaccinated. The maximum number of customers was 90 with extra seats provided. It also had alcoholic drink promotions and closed the bar at midnight. Bar K was already severely reprimanded by the competent authorities.
Bars and nightclubs are again being blamed as a source of Covid outbreaks. Dr. Opas said that bars & restaurants are failing to follow required Covid-free measures leading to dangerous consequences.
