The first Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy committee meeting of the year has resolved to push the BCG agenda as a means of raising income for the people, while also preserving the nation’s biodiversity and environment.
The Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) Committee convened on 13 January 2021 at the Government House. Serving as the committee chairman, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha stated that the government will include BCG in its national agenda alongside Thailand 4.0. BCG will be a vehicle to modernize Thailand’s agricultural sector, establish national health security and reduce foreign dependency.
The meeting acknowledged plans to implement the BCG economic model from 2021 to 2027, which will focus primarily on sustainable economic growth. It is also expected to improve people’s quality of life and protect natural resources and biodiversity through the application of knowledge, technology and innovation.
The plan entails revising the strategies of concerned ministries and altering legislation to advance the BCG agenda. Additionally, it will boost private sector BCG-related projects while advancing measures to establish “high-value” agriculture and tourism. The strategy will also promote BCG education among interested overseas counterparts such as Canada, Germany and Denmark.
The meeting approved the 2021-2026 BCG Strategic Plan which consists of the following strategies:
Strategy 1: Promoting sustainability of biological resources through balancing conservation and utilization.
Strategy 2: Strengthening communities and grassroots economy by employing resource capital, creativity, technology, biodiversity and cultural diversity to create value to products and services, enabling the communities to move up the value chain.
Strategy 3: Upgrading and promoting sustainable competitiveness of Thai BCG industries with knowledge, technology and innovation focusing on green manufacturing.
Strategy 4: Building resilience to global changes.
The BCG Strategic Plan will focus on 4 sectors, namely 1) food and agriculture, 2) medical and wellness, 3) bioenergy, biomaterial and biochemical, and 4) tourism and creative economy. It will also emphasize utilizing biodiversity and cultural diversity as a basis for developing the nation and improving people’s quality of life.
The meeting also discussed the BCG plan for 2023, which includes establishing a budget for BCG-related efforts, changing tactics to prioritize the needs of the people and closing the wealth gap, and fostering an investment climate favourable to private entities interested in the BCG.
Furthermore, this strategy will support the development of a National Food Bank, which will distribute surplus food to those in need.
