The Prime Minister of Malaysia will pay an official visit to Thailand and Cambodia from February 24 to 26, 2022. This will also be his introductory visit in line with ASEAN tradition for new leaders assuming office.
The visits are undertaken at the invitations of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, His Excellency Samdech Techo Hun Sen, and the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, His Excellency General Prayut Chan-o-cha.
Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana has disclosed that the Honourable Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Prime Minister of Malaysia, will pay an official visit to Thailand as a guest of the Royal Thai Government on February 24-26, 2022. The Malaysian Prime Minister will meet Prime Minister of Thailand and Defense Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House on February 25.
During the visit to Thailand on 24 – 26 February, YAB Prime Minister will hold a meeting with His Excellency Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha. The meeting will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss the way forward in strengthening multifaceted cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand. Focus areas include economic cooperation, post -COVID-19 cooperation, reopening of borders, and key connectivity projects crossing the land borders. YAB Prime Minister’s programmes will also include a session with the Malaysia-Thailand Chamber of Commerce (MTCC) and a session with Keluarga Malaysia in Bangkok.
The spokesperson stated that the visit will offer opportunities for both sides to discuss issues to strengthen bilateral cooperation, especially to revitalize the economies of both countries that were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Both sides will also exchange views on increasing collaborations in areas such as security, economic partnership, and connectivity near border areas and cooperation within ASEAN and other multilateral frameworks.
The high-level visits by YAB Prime Minister to Cambodia and Thailand reflect the friendly and comprehensive ties Malaysia has with both neighbours, bilaterally and in the framework of the ASEAN family. The visits will allow Malaysia and the respective countries to explore joint initiatives in post-pandemic recovery efforts, as well as in addressing regional and international challenges.
YAB Prime Minister will be accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs YB Dato’ Sri Saifuddin Abdullah, Senior Minister of International Trade and Industry YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Deputy Minister of Federal Territories YB Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, Chairman of RISDA YB Datuk Seri Hj. Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif, as well as senior government officials.
The Official Visits will be conducted with the strict COVID-19 preventative Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in place in Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand.
