A summer storm has partially destroyed the roof of a new terminal at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, causing extensive damage to certain structures.
Photos on social media showed the newly built roof and a wall after it buckled under the weight of rainwater from a summer storm.
According to airport officials, no one was inside the building when the incident took place. The damaged terminal, which had been built to serve as an arrival hall for tour groups, is located next to Don Mueang Airport’s Terminal 1.
Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob has since ordered Airports of Thailand Plc to conduct an immediate investigation into the cause of the collapse, despite the fact that the building was completed only a year ago and was not in use during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Meteorological Department forecast heavy rainfall and strong winds in Bangkok and the surrounding area on Monday evening. The agency had previously warned of summer storms in the northern, northeastern, eastern and central regions, including Greater Bangkok, due to a high-pressure system.
Residents were also advised not to go outside and to avoid being near large trees or weak structures during this time.
