Thai delegates will take part in public health discussions and the election of the global health director general at the 75th World Health Assembly in Switzerland.
According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul, Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, and other public health officials will attend this year’s World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 22 to 28. This will be the first face-to-face Health Assembly since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
The Minister of Health will deliver a speech during the Assembly on the theme of this year’s Health Assembly, “Health for Peace, Peace for Health.” He will also share Thailand’s pandemic experience with other representatives, as WHO has chosen the Kingdom as the third host of the UHPR pilot program, which aims to examine pandemic management lessons in emergency health and universal care preparedness.
Mr. Anutin will also take part in the election of the WHO Director-General, in which Tedros Adhanom Ghrebreyesus, the current Director-General, will be the sole candidate. Mr. Anutin will also speak as the Southeast Asian region’s representative.
To discuss bilateral issues, the Minister and other Thai delegates will meet with representatives from other countries and health organizations. These include the establishment in Thailand of the ASEAN Center for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED) and preparations for the 12th APEC High Level Meeting on Health and Economy (HLM).
The Deputy Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with regional leaders and ministers of public health to discuss ways to strengthen Thailand-led public health cooperation.
