Krabi province promotes durian cultivation

According to Mr. Somchai Hanpakdeepatima, deputy governor of Krabi province, there are about 3000 rai of durian plantations in the district but the most cultivated areas are on the side of Ban Talay Hoi, Plai Phraya District and Krabi Province. Therefore, according to the deputy governor, it would be possible to expand the area of durian cultivation to 6000 rai.
The variety cultivated in the region is the Mon Thong durian which is sold wholesale at around 100 baht per kilogramme when it leaves the gardens.

As an example, the durian Mon Thong orchard of Mr. Panumas Sai Ngam located in Ban Talay allows to harvest 70 tons of fruits on a surface of 35 rai generating an income of approximately 7 million baht annually. The durian produced in Ban Talay is high quality due to the fertile soil and favorable climate of the area.

Now, the government agency of the supply chain system, manages the production chain as well as the supply of primary materials, storage and delivery process to the final customer.

The government’s objective is to structure the durian industry to establish recognized production norms and quality standards. The organization of the sector will also allow a mutualization of resources that will reduce production costs through grouped purchases and will also promote a recognized label that will meet the requirements of the market, in order to raise local farms on a large scale market.
