Ministry Resolves 152,679 Informal Debt Cases, Reduces Debt by 1.2 Billion Baht

The Ministry of Interior has made significant strides in tackling the nation’s informal debt crisis, successfully resolving 152,679 cases and reducing the total debt by 1.2 billion baht.

Permanent Secretary for Interior, Suttipong Juljarern, announced that the ministry had introduced a registration system aimed at citizens struggling with informal debts, attracting 153,400 registrants. Specialized teams from various relevant units have been actively mediating between creditors and debtors to address these cases. Presently, 721 cases remain under mediation, with efforts ongoing to conclude them swiftly. Additionally, 468 cases have been referred to local police for further legal action.

The resolution outcomes have varied, with some cases reaching mutual agreements between creditors and debtors, while others have led to criminal proceedings. Although the registration period for debt resolution has ended, the ministry continues to work on improving the quality of life for those affected. This includes increasing access to low-interest loans and expanding economic opportunities to prevent the recurrence of debt.

Suttipong has urged provincial governors and district chiefs to continue promoting support services for individuals with unresolved informal debts. Citizens in need of assistance can contact the Damrongtham Center via the 24/7 hotline at 1567 or visit www.damrongdhama.moi.go.th.

In attendance at the announcement were several high-ranking officials, underscoring the importance of the initiative and the collective effort required to address the ongoing challenges of informal debt within the country.
