A taxi driver involved in a hit-and-run incident was apprehended yesterday after police orchestrated a sting operation using the victim as a passenger. The driver initially denied the allegations, but CCTV footage was pivotal in securing his conviction.
The incident occurred around 6:17 PM in Mueang Thong Thani. CCTV captured a yellow taxi entering a village alley and colliding with a parked white Mercedes-Benz sedan before speeding away.
The owner of the Mercedes-Benz reported the hit-and-run to Pak Kret Police Station, prompting an investigation. Deputy Superintendent Tiras Trintecha disclosed that after reviewing the footage and identifying the taxi’s registration number, the police formulated a plan to capture the driver.
Their efforts were rewarded when the victim spotted a taxi matching the description. The police and the victim discreetly followed the taxi, waiting for an opportune moment to implement their plan.
Once the taxi’s passenger disembarked, the victim’s girlfriend, posing as a passenger, hailed the taxi and asked to be dropped off near Pak Kret Police Station. Throughout the ride, the victim and police stayed in continuous contact, closely trailing the taxi to avoid arousing suspicion.
As the taxi approached the police station, officers intercepted the vehicle and forced it to stop. Despite initially denying his involvement, the driver confessed after being confronted with the CCTV evidence.
The taxi driver was taken into custody and charged with fleeing the scene of an accident. He was handed over to investigators at Pak Kret Police Station for further legal proceedings. Nonthaburi provincial transport officials have been notified to review the driver’s records and consider additional penalties.
This case highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between victims and police, leading to a swift resolution and ensuring justice is served. Numerous officials were present during the operation, underscoring the importance of teamwork in law enforcement.
