Bangkok Port to Undergo Major Vertical Expansion

The Thai Transport Ministry has announced plans to enhance Bangkok Port, located in the Khlong Toei district of the capital, countering earlier speculations of its relocation. The strategy focuses on vertical expansion to optimize land use within the existing area, ensuring efficient use of space.

Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri revealed that this decision follows a directive from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. In response, the Office of the Council of State (OCS) and the National Economics and Social Development Council (NESDC) will collaborate with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) to conduct a feasibility study. The study will focus on developing vertical residential projects to accommodate local communities around the port.

In addition to residential developments, the PAT will explore expanding commercial spaces to support the logistics industry while minimizing environmental impacts. The proposed enhancements include constructing mixed-use and office buildings and developing facilities for large cruise ships. These efforts aim to boost tourism and reinforce the port’s role as a key logistics hub along the Chao Phraya River.

The ambitious development plan for Bangkok Port, as outlined in PAT’s master plan, envisions an investment exceeding 100 billion baht distributed across five distinct zones. These include administrative areas, a “smart port,” a cruise terminal complete with associated commercial spaces, a sports complex with a public park, and designated future development areas for e-commerce and additional logistics activities.

The project’s feasibility study will involve officials from the OCS, NESDC, and PAT, ensuring comprehensive planning and execution. The involvement of these agencies underscores the project’s significance and the government’s commitment to enhancing Bangkok Port’s infrastructure.
