ITD Advances Rama 3 Expressway Construction Ahead of Schedule

On November 11, 2022, ITD Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited announced significant progress in the construction of the Rama 3 Expressway – Daokanong – Bangkok Outer Ring Road West project. The update highlights the installation of a Multipurpose Erection Truss, a first in Thailand, which allows for the simultaneous placement of Precast Crossbeams and Precast Segmental Concrete Box Sections. This advancement is part of Contract 3, aimed at building a double-deck expressway stretching approximately five kilometers from the new Rama 9 bridge (Contract 4) to the Rama 2 Expressway exit.

The project is currently progressing at 10.88%, exceeding the planned 9.66% and moving ahead of schedule by 1.22%. ITD released an infographic depicting the completed construction, providing a clear and accessible visualization of the project’s final appearance. The expressway intersects with the Purple Line (SRT Ratchadapisek branch) near Taepoon-Ratchadaphrarana and features elevated sections along Sukhwattan Road. These sections traverse key intersections at Daokanong, Bangpa Kaeo, and Pracha Uthit, pass beneath the Phase 1 expressway, navigate through the Sam Phraraedang junction, and extend to Kuroin.

A simulated image of the Sukhwattan checkpoint post-construction shows the Purple Line running beneath the new bridge. Drivers will have the option to ascend via the existing Rama 9 bridge or the newly constructed bridge, while descending traffic will access Daokanong through Sukhwattan Road.

It was reported that Contract 3 involves the construction of a six-lane elevated roadway from Bangpakok Hospital 9 to the Daokanong checkpoint over the Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway (Phase 1), covering a five-kilometer stretch from Daokanong to Sukhwattan and Ratchadapisek. The ITD-VCB consortium, comprising Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited and Vichitphan Construction Co., Ltd., is overseeing the execution of this segment.

The entire Rama 3 Expressway – Daokanong – Outer Ring Road West project spans 18.7 kilometers with an estimated budget of 30 billion Baht, divided into five contracts. The construction includes a six-lane elevated road along Rama 2’s median up to the Daokanong toll plaza, overlapping with Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway to Rama 3 near the Bang Kho interchange. Additionally, a new eight-lane bridge is planned to run parallel to the south of the Rama 9 bridge to cross the Chaophraya River.

The project is expected to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2024 or early 2025, enhancing Bangkok’s infrastructure and improving traffic flow across the western regions of the city.
