A masseuse at the center of controversy surrounding the death of luk thung singer Chayada Prao-hom has called for fairness and an opportunity to share her perspective. The 20-year-old singer, known as “Ping Chayada,” died on December 8, two months after reportedly undergoing neck manipulation at a massage shop in Udon Thani.
An autopsy revealed Chayada’s death resulted from sepsis and a fungal infection, with no evidence linking the massage to her illness. However, the timeline of events has left lingering questions about the procedure’s potential role.
The masseuse, identifying herself only as Aoy, expressed shock upon learning she might have treated Chayada. “I was so shocked when I heard that I was that masseuse,” she said. “I have a massage therapist license and years of experience. I’ve never encountered a situation like this before.” Aoy emphasized her readiness to cooperate with investigations and urged for fairness in addressing the issue.
Chayada reportedly visited the massage shop three times in October for neck pain. While the shop employs seven licensed therapists who meet legal training requirements, Aoy said she could not recall if she had personally treated the singer.
Dr. Somchaichot Piyawatwela, head of the Udon Thani public health office, confirmed that the autopsy showed no connection between the massage and Chayada’s death. Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin reiterated this, citing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results that found no cervical bone fractures or dislocations.
Chayada’s condition reportedly worsened after her October visits. On November 22, she was admitted to the intensive care unit at Udon Thani Hospital with severe muscle weakness and later succumbed to septic shock.
The case has sparked broader discussions about the safety of traditional Thai massage practices. Minister Somsak emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence through quality control measures and safety standards in Thai traditional medicine.
Chayada’s mother, while still questioning whether the neck manipulation contributed to her daughter’s condition, has decided against seeking a second autopsy. The singer’s cremation is set for Wednesday.
