A tourist was fatally attacked by a wild elephant in Phu Kradueng National Park, Loei province, on the morning of December 10, 2024. The victim, identified as Jeeranan, 49, from Chachoengsao province, was walking along a trail from her campsite to the Phen Phop Mai waterfall, a popular spot known for its vibrant red maple leaves, when the tragic incident occurred.
The attack was reported to park rangers by fellow visitors at approximately 9:47 a.m. Park officials quickly arrived at the scene, where they discovered the woman’s lifeless body. This marks the first recorded elephant attack on this particular trail, raising safety concerns among officials.
In response to the incident, Attapol Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, announced the temporary closure of the trail and other paths commonly used by wildlife. The closures are intended to prevent further tragedies while ensuring the safety of park visitors. Other trails remain open, with enhanced safety measures in place.
Local authorities, including Phu Kradueng police, have launched an investigation into the incident. Additionally, an internal panel has been formed to review the circumstances leading to the fatal attack.
Phu Kradueng National Park is one of Thailand’s most visited nature reserves, especially during the cool season from late October to December. It is famed for its scenic trails, panoramic views, and attractions such as the Phen Phop Mai waterfall, a favored destination for photographing the area’s iconic red maple leaves.
