Rama II Demolition Nears Completion After Fatal Collapse

Efforts to dismantle damaged steel structures and concrete beams on Rama II Road are progressing, with the Highway Department estimating normal traffic flow will resume by December 14, 2024. This follows the fatal collapse of scaffolding and beams during elevated road construction in Samut Sakhon Province, which caused multiple deaths and injuries earlier in the year.

As of December 10, 2024, demolition efforts, led by Highway Department Director-General Aphirath Chaiwongnoi and local officials, have reached 70% completion. Teams are carefully removing deformed steel structures, known as Launching Gantry (LG), and associated concrete segments. Progress has been hampered by the need for on-site adjustments to ensure safety, but authorities are confident that the repairs will conclude within the scheduled timeframe.

Traffic management remains a priority as demolition continues. On December 12, an additional outbound lane was opened to ease congestion, with plans to adjust routes during peak hours as needed. Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes until all repairs are finalized.

Officials from the Highway Police and local authorities have collaborated to facilitate traffic flow and ensure public safety. The collapse site has been secured, with safety monitoring systems installed. Once repairs are complete, the highway will reopen fully, restoring access for commuters.
