Bangkok survey reveals top five traffic-congested intersections

A recent survey has identified the five most traffic-congested intersections in Bangkok during morning and evening rush hours, with the Asok-Phetchaburi intersection leading the list.

Conducted by media intelligence company Dataxet from November 1 to 30, the survey analyzed social media complaints about traffic jams using its DXT360 Essential dashboard. This tool monitors media across platforms, including TV, radio, print, websites, and social media, to provide insights into traffic patterns and congestion hotspots.

The Asok-Phetchaburi intersection emerged as the most problematic, drawing 41.5% of complaints. This junction, where Phetchaburi Road, Asok-Montri Road, and Asok-Din Daeng Road meet, frequently sees gridlock due to the high volume of vehicles and multiple traffic signals.

The Lat Phrao intersection, located near a major shopping mall, recorded the second-highest number of complaints at 18%. Rama IX and Sathon-Surasak intersections followed, with 17.8% and 15.9% of complaints, respectively. Both are situated near business districts and schools, contributing to heavy congestion. The Pratunam intersection, also surrounded by shopping malls, ranked fifth, with 6.1% of social media complaints.

Bangkok’s Traffic Police Division, in collaboration with district police stations, the Land Transport Department, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s traffic and transportation department, oversees traffic management in the capital. Social media platforms, including Facebook and X, have become vital tools for real-time traffic updates, helping drivers avoid gridlocked areas. Popular accounts such as FM91 Trafficpro, the Traffic Control and Command Centre, and hotline 1197 provide regular updates.

Dataxet has suggested several solutions to alleviate congestion in Bangkok. These include the implementation of an intelligent transport system incorporating technologies such as closed-circuit cameras and traffic sensors to optimize traffic light management. Additionally, the company recommended adopting travel demand management strategies, such as introducing congestion charges in key areas of the city center.

The findings highlight the growing role of technology and social media in addressing urban traffic challenges while underscoring the need for comprehensive traffic solutions to improve mobility in Bangkok.
