Thailand’s renewable energy sector is poised for growth following the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) second-phase renewables auction, which awarded new development projects to 72 companies, including Thai Solar Energy and Gunkul Engineering. The auction allocated over 2.14 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, comprising 1.58GW for solar farms and 0.56GW for wind farms.
Thai Solar Energy secured licences for 136 megawatts (MW) of solar farm capacity. The company plans to invest 4 billion baht in these projects, selling electricity at a feed-in tariff of 2.1679 baht per kilowatt-hour under a 25-year contract. These developments will increase Thai Solar Energy’s generation capacity from 242MW to 378MW, with future participation in ERC auctions targeting at least 100MW of additional capacity.
Gunkul Engineering was granted licences to develop 319MW of renewable energy projects, including 284MW of wind farms and 35MW of solar farms. The facilities are scheduled to commence operations between 2027 and 2030, raising Gunkul’s total capacity to 1,800MW. The company aims to expand capacity by 35% in 2025-2026, adding 100-150MW annually.
With these initiatives, Thailand continues to bolster its renewable energy capabilities, supporting the nation’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.
