Russian Tourist Dies in Phuket Jet Ski Collision

PHUKET — A 58-year-old Russian tourist, identified as Mr. Kirill, tragically lost his life in a jet ski collision off Karon Beach, Phuket, on the evening of December 17, 2024. The incident prompted an immediate search operation, culminating in the discovery of his body by local fishermen in the early hours of December 18.

The accident came to light after another tourist sought help at a beachside shop. The shop owner promptly notified authorities, and rescue teams, including the Pak Bang Water Rescue Center, initiated a search. At 12:45 a.m., the victim’s body was found trapped among rocks in the water.

Medical examiners from Vachira Phuket Hospital conducted a preliminary assessment, determining the time of death to be 2–4 hours before the body was recovered. No visible injuries were reported, and a full autopsy is underway as part of the investigation. The Russian Embassy has been informed to coordinate with the victim’s family.

This tragedy coincided with ongoing efforts to regulate Phuket’s jet ski operations. Maritime officials discovered 18 unlicensed jet skis during inspections near Laem Nga, Mali Island, and Pae Island on the same day. Operators of unlicensed jet skis face fines of up to 10,000 baht and a suspension of services under the Thai Waters Navigation Act.
