Bangkok Illuminates with Festival of Light and Culture

Bangkok, December 18, 2024 – The Bangkok Illumination Festival 2024 is transforming the Thai capital into a vibrant spectacle of light and culture from December 17, 2024, to January 5, 2025. This nightly event, held from 6 PM to 10 PM, showcases Thailand’s cultural richness and modern creativity while bolstering its reputation as a global hub for world-class festivals and events.

As part of the Thailand Winter Festivals 2024 under the theme “7 Wonders of Thailand,” the Illumination Festival highlights artistic and festive experiences across Bangkok. The event aims to stimulate local tourism, elevate Thailand’s profile internationally, and enhance its night-time economy.

This year’s theme, “Moo Deng Takes Over Bangkok,” features Nong Moo Deng, a social media-famous pygmy hippo from Khao Kheow Open Zoo, as its mascot. Visitors can enjoy whimsical light displays and installations across nine key landmarks in Bangkok, spread along three distinct routes:

  • Pathumwan to Nimibutr Stadium: Highlights include the dynamic “DJ Deng” light installation at Nimibutr Stadium, inflatable art at One Siam Skywalk, and artistic installations from Siam Centre to Central World.
  • Hua Lamphong to Yaowarat: This route offers stunning projection mapping at Hua Lamphong Station, colorful lights along Phadung Krung Kasem Canal, and the “Muay Deng” art installation at Odeon Circle.
  • Asoke-Sukhumvit: Visitors can explore immersive projection mapping at Asoke BTS Skywalk and a glowing picnic-themed experience at Benjasiri Park.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) predicts the festival will attract over 435,000 visitors, generating an estimated 1.2 billion Baht in economic activity. Visitors are encouraged to use Bangkok’s extensive public transportation system, including the BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway, to navigate the illuminated landmarks conveniently and sustainably.

The festival reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing Thailand’s cultural and creative tourism, with officials highlighting its role in driving economic growth and inspiring international visitors to explore the country’s many wonders.
