Thailand to Launch Global e-Visa System in 2025

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the global rollout of its advanced electronic visa (e-Visa) system, set to launch on January 1, 2025. The initiative aims to modernize and simplify visa applications for international travelers.

At a special event on December 17 at Vithes Samosorn, Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa introduced the system, alongside Worawut Pongprapapant, Director-General of the Department of Consular Affairs. The e-Visa, developed over more than a decade, promises to eliminate embassy queues and physical document submissions, offering a streamlined, fully online application experience.

First introduced in Beijing in 2019, the e-Visa system transitioned to a sticker-less format in 2021. The upgraded platform, accessible at www.thaievisa.go.th, will operate 24/7 and integrate with 94 Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates-General worldwide. Built on the principles of “Apply, Anywhere, Anytime,” it incorporates real-time data exchanges with key agencies, including the Immigration Bureau and National Intelligence Agency, enhancing security measures.

Initially, applicants will complete online payments through a partnership with Kasikorn Bank, although some may still need to verify payment at Thai diplomatic missions. Full online payment functionality is expected within six months. Travelers will receive their e-Visa via email, allowing digital validation at airline check-in counters.

The system, which also accommodates student and work visas, complements existing visa-free entry for tourists from 93 countries for stays of up to 60 days. Officials highlighted its role in supporting Thailand’s position as a global hub for tourism, business, and international exchange.
