A baby elephant trapped in an animal snare was successfully rescued and treated for an infected wound in Chon Buri’s Si Racha district yesterday, thanks to the coordinated efforts of forest officials and veterinarians.
Kongkiat Temtomnan, director of the 2nd Conservation Area Management Office in Si Racha, reported that a large herd of elephants had been spotted in the forest. Among them, a calf was found with its right front leg caught in a trap.
Upon locating the injured elephant, the rescue team observed it lying beneath its mother, flanked by two other elephants. To proceed safely, the officials coaxed the herd to move about 100 meters away. However, the mother and calf refused to relocate.
Veterinarians used tranquilizer darts to sedate the mother and the calf. The team then carefully removed the trap from the calf’s leg, cleaned the infected wound, and administered antibiotics to prevent further complications.
According to officials, the mother and calf were closely monitored until they regained consciousness. The successful rescue reflects ongoing efforts to protect the local elephant population.
