Thailand re-enrolls 360,000 children in Zero Dropout push

The Thai government has successfully reintegrated over 360,000 children into classrooms as part of its Thailand Zero Dropout policy, an initiative aimed at reducing the nation’s dropout rate by 2025. The Education Ministry announced this milestone as it intensifies efforts to ensure educational access for all children.

A ministry survey revealed that 1,025,514 children aged 3-18 dropped out of school in 2024. Among them, 767,304 were Thai nationals, with 365,231—47.6%—already re-enrolled. In contrast, 31,816 foreign children, representing 12.32% of non-Thai dropouts, have also returned to school.

Education Minister Permpoon Chidchob emphasized the importance of addressing the dropout crisis as part of the government’s commitment to educational equality. “We will ensure all Thai children receive compulsory education,” he stated, highlighting the introduction of tailored programs to provide formal, non-formal, and informal education based on each child’s individual needs and potential.

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has also pledged to assist children who cannot return to school due to logistical or personal challenges. According to OBEC director Niyom Phaisopha, the agency plans to deliver educational services directly to homes for those unable to attend regular schooling.

This campaign reflects a broader effort to collaborate with various educational institutions, including those under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and private schools, to ensure no child is left behind.
