Villagers in Krabi Urge Action on Monkey Invasion

Residents of Nua Khlong district in Krabi province have urged authorities to address the growing problem of long-tailed macaques, which have ventured out of their mangrove forest habitats in search of food. The primates have been causing disturbances in local communities and along popular beaches.

Villagers report that the monkeys have been rummaging through garbage bins, destroying vegetable gardens, invading food shops, and damaging property, including roof tiles. Beyond the inconvenience, locals fear the nuisance could deter tourists and tarnish Krabi’s reputation as a premier destination known for its iconic Phi-Phi Islands, pristine beaches, and lush green forests.

Suwat Suksiri, head of the Thung Talay Non-Hunting Zone on Lanta Island, acknowledged the issue, attributing it to the rising population of macaques. He proposed implementing sterilization programs every five years to control their numbers. Suwat also urged residents and visitors to refrain from feeding the monkeys, as this practice encourages their disruptive behavior and increases dependence on human-provided food.

The appeal reflects growing concern in a region that relies heavily on tourism and natural beauty. Officials are expected to weigh the need for wildlife conservation alongside the interests of local communities and the tourism sector.

In recent months, similar complaints have arisen in other parts of Thailand, highlighting the challenges of human-wildlife coexistence. Local authorities, conservationists, and community leaders may need to collaborate on sustainable solutions to prevent further conflict.

Local officials, along with representatives from wildlife organizations, have visited affected areas to assess the situation and engage with residents, who are eager for swift and effective measures.
