A 62-year-old man named Phon embarked on a 500-kilometer journey on foot after being expelled from his residence in Satuek District, Buriram Province, by his wife and stepson. His destination was his hometown in Phon Phisai District, Nong Khai Province.
Phon had cohabited with his wife for over 13 years. In mid-December 2014, his wife’s son relocated from Bangkok to live with them, leading to familial discord. Subsequently, Phon was asked to leave the household. On December 28, 2014, he departed without any personal belongings or money, relying on police stations for shelter and temples for sustenance during his trek. His journey was further complicated by a previous leg injury from a car accident in his youth.

After 13 days of walking, a local sugarcane truck driver offered Phon a ride to Chaiwan District, Udon Thani Province. Upon arrival, he was taken to Chaiwan Hospital, where medical staff treated his swollen feet. Phon expressed deep emotional distress over his family’s rejection, stating that despite working as a general laborer and welder, and providing all his earnings to his wife, he was still forced to leave. He mentioned his intention to reunite with his grandson in Phon Phisai District and to ordain as a monk upon his return, seeking solace in spiritual practice.
Local authorities, including Police Colonel Ratapolchai Pensongkram, Superintendent of Chaiwan Police Station, and community members, coordinated efforts to assist Phon in reaching his hometown. Their support underscores the communal solidarity present in times of individual hardship.
