On January 13, 2025, a catamaran named “AMERAY 888” began sinking off the coast of Phuket during a day trip to Racha Island. The vessel encountered trouble approximately 1.6 nautical miles north of Koh Racha Yai when a starboard window failed, allowing water to flood the boat.
The crew promptly issued a distress signal, which was received by the Phuket rescue center. Nearby vessels, including local boats, fishing vessels, and a luxury tour boat, responded swiftly, ensuring all passengers and crew were safely rescued before the catamaran sank completely.
The Phuket Regional Harbor Office noted that adherence to safety protocols, particularly the mandatory use of life jackets, was instrumental in preventing casualties. Seven individuals sustained minor injuries, such as scrapes and bruises, and were transported to Chalong Pier, where Tourist Police and translators provided assistance.
The “AMERAY 888,” a 44.39-gross-ton catamaran registered in October 2014, was operating with a valid license set to expire in April 2025. Maritime authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the window failure that led to the sinking.
The Chinese consular office in Phuket has been informed of the incident and confirmed that all Chinese nationals on board are safe.
