Phuket authorities are investigating the deaths of two foreign tourists who passed away after collapsing at a renowned music festival held on the island. Both incidents occurred on the night of January 18, raising concerns over safety and health issues during large-scale events.
The first victim, a 32-year-old American tourist identified as Minh Nguyen Quang Phan, reportedly fell unconscious during the festival. Emergency medical personnel stationed at the venue provided immediate assistance before transporting him to Thalang Hospital at approximately 11:35 PM. Despite resuscitation efforts, Mr. Phan was pronounced dead at 12:30 AM on January 19.
Hours earlier, another tragedy unfolded when Canadian tourist Sharfaraz Maqbul Ahmed, 28, collapsed under similar circumstances. Mr. Ahmed, who had been staying alone at a local hotel, was attending the event with friends when he lost consciousness. Paramedics rushed him to Thalang Hospital at 8:50 PM, but doctors declared him deceased at 9:26 PM.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Kraison Boonprasop of Thalang Police Station, who is leading the investigations, confirmed that neither body showed visible signs of trauma. Initial inquiries have found no evidence of foul play in either case, but the precise causes of death remain undetermined. Blood alcohol levels and toxicology tests are being conducted for both victims, and forensic specialists at Vachira Phuket Hospital will carry out detailed autopsies.
The U.S. and Canadian embassies have been notified and are assisting in contacting the victims’ families to arrange for the repatriation of their remains.
The back-to-back fatalities have prompted local authorities to stress the importance of a comprehensive investigation. They have assured the public that all possible factors leading to the deaths will be examined, including environmental and health-related risks associated with the event.
The high-profile music festival, which draws attendees from around the globe, had been operating under stringent safety measures, according to organizers. However, with two recorded deaths in a single night, questions are being raised about the adequacy of medical support and crowd management protocols.
Police Colonel Nikorn Chuthong, Superintendent of Thalang Police Station, and other senior officials are overseeing the investigations. Results of the autopsies and toxicology tests are expected to provide clarity on these tragic incidents.
