Thailand to Receive New Giant Pandas from China

Thailand is set to welcome a new pair of giant pandas from China as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two nations. The move coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China this year.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confirmed the arrangement on February 5, ahead of her visit to China, where she is scheduled to meet with Premier Li Qiang. Among the topics on the agenda will be the details surrounding the pandas’ arrival and care, she stated.

While the initiative is seen as a symbol of goodwill, it has also drawn some criticism. Opponents have raised concerns over the financial burden on Thailand, as the pandas will only be on loan for approximately ten years, with the Thai government responsible for covering the costs of their upkeep. Some argue that these funds would be better spent on supporting local wildlife conservation efforts.

Thailand first participated in China’s panda diplomacy in 2003 when it received a pair of giant pandas, later named Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, who were housed at Chiang Mai Zoo. Lin Hui gave birth to a cub, Lin Ping, in 2009, but the offspring was later returned to China as stipulated in the agreement. Chuang Chuang passed away in 2019, followed by Lin Hui in 2023.

Discussions are underway regarding the location of the new pandas. Prime Minister Paetongtarn noted that they may be housed in the same facility as the previous pair. Jatuporn Buruspat, permanent secretary of the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, stated that options include renovating the existing enclosure or constructing a new one. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Chalermchai Sri-on has inspected potential sites for the new arrivals.
