Thailand Launches Training Program to Tackle Tourism Labor Shortage

Thailand’s Ministry of Labor has partnered with Thammasat University and other educational institutions to address labor shortages in the country’s tourism and service industries. The nationwide training initiative, led by the Department of Skill Development, is designed to equip 100,000 workers with essential skills ahead of the government’s push to make 2025 the “Golden Year of Tourism.”

The program will be implemented across 62 provinces and focuses on three target groups: current employees in the tourism and service sectors, vocational and university students, and independent workers, including online vendors and freelancers. Participants can enroll in either an 18-hour course for 60,000 people or a more intensive 30-hour course for 10,000 people. Both courses follow a hybrid learning model, combining online instruction via Zoom with in-person training at designated locations.

Additionally, 30,000 participants will have access to a 30-hour English language course offered through an e-learning platform. Graduates will receive a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) certification from the Thammasat University Language Institute, ensuring their proficiency meets international standards.

The initiative aims to enhance workforce readiness and support the country’s economic growth by addressing skill gaps in key service industries. Officials from the Ministry of Labor and Thammasat University attended the program’s launch, emphasizing its role in strengthening Thailand’s competitiveness in global tourism.
