Thailand’s Revised Gambling Act Set for Cabinet Review on February 25

An updated version of Thailand’s Gambling Act, which aims to modernize regulations and impose stricter penalties on illegal gambling, is expected to be presented to the cabinet for approval on February 25. The proposed amendments address the rise of online gambling and seek to enhance law enforcement measures against unauthorized betting activities.

According to Interior Ministry spokesperson Traisuree Traisoranakul, the revisions have received broad public approval. A survey conducted by the Provincial Administration Department between January 30 and February 14 indicated widespread support for the changes. The amendments aim to align the law with current challenges posed by digital gambling platforms.

The draft legislation introduces tougher penalties for individuals involved in illegal gambling. Those found guilty of organizing on-site gambling operations could face between five and ten years in prison, while participants in such activities may receive up to three years. Online gambling offenses carry even stricter sentences, with organizers, advertisers, and promoters facing prison terms ranging from seven to twelve years.

Additionally, the bill grants authorities the power to conduct searches at suspected illegal gambling venues without prior notice and to summon organizers for questioning. It also expands the definition of gambling to explicitly cover online activities, reflecting the growing prevalence of internet-based betting.

The proposed amendments are part of a broader effort to curb illicit gambling operations. Officials and lawmakers involved in the drafting process have emphasized the need for updated legal measures to combat evolving gambling practices.
