Authorities are investigating the death of a young male elephant whose body was discovered riddled with bullet wounds and showing signs of electrocution in a forested area spanning five eastern Thai provinces. The elephant, estimated to be eight years old and weighing approximately five tons, was found on February 20, 2015, on a dirt road cutting through agricultural land in Chachoengsao Province.
According to officials from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, the elephant had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with more than ten concentrated around its hindquarters. Preliminary assessments suggest the injuries were inflicted by 9mm bullets and shotgun pellets. In addition, burn marks on the tip of its trunk indicate it may have been electrocuted before it collapsed. Investigators discovered a coiled electric wire about 300 meters from the scene, typically used to keep wildlife away from crops or livestock. No individuals have come forward to claim ownership of the wire, which has been taken as evidence.
The remains of the elephant were relocated to the Khao Yai Conservation Unit in Bo Thong District, Chonburi Province, where veterinarians will conduct an autopsy and collect further evidence. Officials from multiple agencies, including conservation officers and law enforcement, were present at the site during the investigation.
