Thailand’s dry season begins on February 28

Thailand’s dry season is set to officially begin on February 28, 2025, and will last until mid-May. According to the Meteorological Department, the upcoming dry season is expected to see average maximum temperatures of 35-36°C, slightly lower than last year’s highs. Dr. Sugunyanee Yavinchan, director-general of the Meteorological Department, outlined the criteria for the season’s onset, noting that the transition occurs when over 60% of Thailand’s northern, northeastern, central, and eastern regions consistently experience temperatures above 35°C. Additionally, the shift from the northeastern monsoon to a southeasterly wind flow marks the change.

April is anticipated to be the hottest month, with temperatures surpassing 42°C in several provinces, including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Sukhothai, among others. Although high temperatures will dominate, occasional storms are forecast. Dr. Sugunyanee also reported that rainfall during the dry season will likely increase by 20% compared to last year, although it will be sporadic and brief in duration.

In a separate forecast, the Meteorological Department anticipates a cold front, likely to bring moderate to strong winds, which will affect northeastern Thailand and the South China Sea from Sunday to Tuesday. This system may bring periods of heavy precipitation to the region.

Officials highlighted the expected weather conditions for the coming months and urged the public to stay informed and prepared.
