Thailand Marks National Elephant Day on March 13

Thailand observes National Elephant Day annually on March 13 to highlight the importance of elephant conservation. The initiative originated from the National Identity Committee under the Prime Minister’s Office, which recognized the significance of elephants in Thai culture and ecology. The proposal was approved by Parliament on May 26, 1998, and later endorsed by the Cabinet. The official announcement was made in the Royal Gazette on June 18 of the same year.

Elephants have long been a national symbol of Thailand, playing a crucial role in the country’s history. From their depiction on early national flags to their use in historic battles such as the legendary elephant duel of King Naresuan, these animals have held deep cultural significance. Today, the image of Thai elephants continues to be recognized worldwide through various media, including advertisements, artwork, and fashion items.

Beyond cultural relevance, elephants also contribute significantly to Thailand’s forest ecosystems. As large herbivores, they act as an umbrella species, shaping their environment in ways that support other wildlife. Their foraging habits help disperse seeds over long distances, creating new plant growth, while the paths they carve through forests allow other animals to move and feed. Additionally, their dung enriches soil fertility and provides sustenance for various insects.

To commemorate National Elephant Day in 2025, the Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand, in collaboration with Ban Pror Chang Conserve Karen’s Elephants, is organizing events on March 13 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Activities will take place at Thai PBS headquarters in Bangkok and at Ban Pror Chang in Tak province. The event will feature exhibitions, panel discussions, and cultural presentations by the Karen elephant-keeping community. Interested participants can register via the foundation’s official Facebook page or watch the live broadcast online.
