Thailand Names Four Cities for Casino Complexes

The Thai government has identified Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, and Phuket as the first locations for planned entertainment complexes that will include casino facilities. The announcement, made by the special committee overseeing the project, comes amid public debate and protests.

Nikom Boonwiset, vice-chairman of the committee, stated on Thursday that the 500-billion-baht initiative aims to attract at least 50 million visitors annually and generate substantial revenue for the economy. The project is expected to create over 40,000 jobs and draw international investors. Each complex will feature luxury hotels, shopping malls, amusement parks, sports arenas, and exhibition centers, with less than 10% of the space designated for casino operations.

Public opposition remains a challenge, with critics arguing that the legislation contains loopholes and lacks strict regulations on casino operations. Thanakorn Khomkrit, secretary-general of the Stop Gambling Foundation, has raised concerns about the bill’s provisions, particularly regarding potential risks of gambling addiction among young people and possible money laundering through associated businesses.

The draft Entertainment Complex Bill, initially set for cabinet review on March 11, has been delayed to allow for public consultation, which the Ministry of Finance is conducting online. Protesters have submitted formal objections, prompting officials to reconsider aspects of the legislation before its next review.

Government representatives, lawmakers, and advocacy groups continue to engage in discussions as the project moves forward.
