Police face criticism over force in Grab rider helmet incident

BANGKOK — Public debate has intensified following allegations that a Patumwan district police officer used excessive force during a traffic stop involving a Grab motorcycle rider and passenger who were reportedly not wearing helmets. The incident, which occurred near MBK Centre in central Bangkok, has prompted questions about police conduct and proportionality in enforcing traffic laws.

The situation came to light after a widely circulated video was posted on Facebook, capturing the moment an officer pursued the motorcycle without a formal checkpoint in place. The chase ended in both the rider and the passenger falling, resulting in injuries. According to initial reports, the officer initiated the pursuit after spotting the passenger riding without a helmet.

Following the incident, both the rider and passenger filed formal complaints against the officer. The passenger’s brother stated that the police action caused her to suffer a head injury and bruising, while the rider sustained abrasions to the knees. Although the officer called for medical assistance at the scene and later issued an apology, the family of the injured woman has expressed intentions to seek legal recourse.

The event has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with users questioning the appropriateness and safety of the officer’s response. The controversy has also reignited discussions around the importance of road safety and helmet use, highlighting the legal obligations of both riders and passengers.

While the Grab rider is expected to be fined for the traffic violations, critics argue that the manner in which the situation was handled may have endangered public safety. This incident reflects broader concerns about law enforcement practices and the critical balance between upholding public safety and maintaining public trust.

Officials have yet to issue a detailed statement, but the Royal Thai Police are expected to review the conduct of the officer involved. The case continues to draw attention as Thailand grapples with improving traffic safety standards and policing transparency.
